How to Play Emoji Match
Emoji Match is a free online matching card game for one player or a room full of them. Two cards sit on the screen, they share exactly one emoji, and whoever spots it first scores. That is the whole game — it takes about ten seconds to learn and considerably longer to get good at. Play it free in your browser; there is nothing to download.
The rules
- Two cards are shown, each covered in emoji at different sizes and angles.
- Exactly one emoji appears on both cards. Never two, never none.
- Tap that emoji. A correct tap scores a point and deals a fresh card.
- A wrong tap briefly locks you out, so guessing is worse than looking.
- When the timer runs out, the highest score wins.
Playing with friends
Starting a game gives you a four-letter room code and a link. Send the link to anyone — a group chat, a Discord server, someone sitting next to you — and they join in their browser. No account, no install, no waiting room. Everyone sees the same center card and races on the same clock, and the server decides who tapped first, so a fast connection helps but nobody can fake a win.
If nobody is around, solo mode gives you the same deck against the clock. In the iOS app it works with no connection at all.
Four ways to get faster
- Search one emoji, not the whole card. Pick a single distinctive emoji on your card and hunt for it on the other. Scanning both cards at once feels faster and is reliably slower.
- Start with the odd one out. The rare, visually loud emoji — a face with an unusual color or shape — is quicker to rule in or out than yet another yellow circle.
- Ignore size and rotation. The same emoji is drawn at wildly different scales and angles on purpose. That is the actual difficulty of the game, and getting used to it is most of the improvement.
- Don't panic-tap. The lockout after a wrong answer costs more than the second you saved. Accuracy beats speed until speed becomes free.
Why a match always exists
The deck is not hand-built or randomly generated and checked. It comes out of a finite projective plane — a geometry in which any two lines meet at exactly one point. Treat each card as a line and each emoji as a point, and the guarantee you want falls out of the structure for free: any two cards share exactly one emoji, always.
Normal mode uses the plane of order 7, giving 57 cards of 8 emoji each. Challenge mode uses order 8, built over the finite field GF(2³), for 73 cards of 9 emoji. More emoji per card means more pairs to scan, which is exactly why it is harder.
This is the same structure behind the classic physical symbol-matching card games, which is why the game feels familiar if you have played one. Emoji Match is an independent game and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any of them.
Common questions
Is it really free?
The browser version is free, has no accounts, and shows no advertisements at all. The iOS app is also free; it shows an occasional advertisement between games, at most once a minute, which is what pays for the server. The privacy policy spells out exactly what is and is not collected.
What devices does it work on?
Any modern browser on a phone, tablet, or computer. There is also a native iOS app if you would rather have it on your home screen and play offline.
How long is a game?
Ninety seconds by default — short enough that "one more" is usually true.
Can I play with two players on one device?
Not currently. Each player needs their own screen, since the whole game is about seeing your own card. Two phones in the same room work perfectly.
